On June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court ruled on the landmark case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This ruling reversed its original decision on the 1973 case Roe v. Wade, as well as the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and overturned women’s established constitutional right to abortion . This opened the door for individual states to regulate any aspect of abortion no longer protected federally.

Since this Supreme Court decision, the landscape of reproductive-related legislation has seen significant shifts across the country. Currently, only 21 states remain that uphold the right to reproductive freedom by protecting access to abortion.

In addition to banning, and often criminalizing, access to abortion, there have been discussions on expanding these efforts toward additional restrictions and a looming threat to our right to privacy when it comes to our own medical decisions.

Democracy depends on equal rights for all people. Losing our right to privacy and the freedom of to make our own reproductive decisions is about more than just access to abortion care. The attack on reproductive choice is a continuation of silencing marginalized individuals and perpetuating inequality. Our vision is to work together to effect lasting change in North Dakota that supports and promotes our reproductive freedom of choice.
